Terminology:

This free crochet potion cauldron amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:

  • st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
  • ch = chain stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • pc = (small) popcorn stitch*
  • FLO = front loop only
  • BLO = back loop only

Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.

In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.

*Please read through the special instructions for this stitch before beginning, as it may be unique for this crochet potion cauldron pattern.

Special Stitch Instructions | Free Crochet Potion Cauldron Amigurumi

Please read through all special stitch instructions carefully before beginning your project, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

Most of this pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Single Crochet:

This pattern uses a variation of the traditional single crochet stitch, sometimes referred to as the YU/YO (yarn under/yarn over) method.

Instead of yarning over before pulling through, this method utilizes a yarn under technique on the first pass of each stitch, as seen below.

how to single crochet for amigurumi free crochet tutorial

Begin by inserting your hook into the next stitch, then yarn under (not over) as shown above. Pull through the stitch, then yarn over as normal and pull through both loops on your hook to complete your single crochet.

Using the above technique produces a slightly tighter and stiffer fabric than traditional single crochet stitches. This method minimizes holes between stitches, improves shaping, and decreases stitch slanting.

This pattern will still work with the traditional technique of single crochet stitches, so choose what works best for you—just be wary that your project may result in having slight visual differences than those shown in examples if using the traditional method.

Invisible Decrease:

This pattern uses a variation of the single crochet decrease stitch, often called an invisible decrease. This method produces a tighter stitch that improves shaping and blends in more seamlessly with regular stitches.

Insert your hook into the front loop only of the next stitch, then insert into the front loop only of the second stitch in the same way.

Yarn under (not over) as shown above and pull through both front loops. Yarn over as normal and pull through both loops on your hook to complete your invisible decrease.

Joining Rounds:

Unless otherwise stated, each round in this pattern is joined at the end with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, followed by one or more chain stitches.

For a cleaner seam, and to ensure that these stitches are not accidentally worked into later, tighten both the slip stitch and chain as shown below.

how to join rounds for amigurumi free crochet tutorial

Hold your working loop firmly on your hook and pull up with your hook until your slip stitch is tight. Then, pull back on your working tail until your loop is back to fitting snugly around your hook.

Repeat these steps with the following one or more chain stitches before your next round, as well.

Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Small Popcorn Stitch:

This free crochet potion cauldron amigurumi pattern uses a variation of the popcorn stitch that utilizes only 3 double crochet stitches, instead of the more common 5 double crochet, as seen below.

how to popcorn stitch free crochet tutorial

Begin by working 3 double crochet into the next stitch. Then, pull up your working loop (large enough that your last stitch will not be accidentally pulled undone) and remove your hook.

Next, insert your hook, from front to back, through the top of the first double crochet you’ve made in the 3 double crochet sequence. Now, pull your working loop from the third double crochet through the top of the first double crochet.

Lastly, pull your working tail so that your working loop fits back snugly around your hook and continue to your next stitch.

Crochet Potion Cauldron Spoon:

This free crochet potion cauldron is designed with an optional stirring spoon embellishment, as seen in the example photo.

Unless altered, the spoon piece will be floppy and malleable. This is best for pieces meant to be handled frequently, such as for play or for comfort.

For pieces meant only for display, however, you may want to customize your crochet potion cauldron with something more rigid.

For example, you could work row 1 around a piece of wire or a toothpick to add rigidity to it, or you could replace the crochet spoon entirely with a small wooden dowel or stick.

Choose whichever method works best for you!

With yarn A (tan), leave a short beginning tail for sewing and chain 12.

Row 1: beginning in 3rd ch from hook, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into each of next 9 sts (10).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a short end tail for sewing, as well.

Set aside for now and continue to round 1 of the crochet potion cauldron.

Crochet Potion Cauldron – Rounds 1 to 5:

With yarn B (green), make a magic ring (or ch 4, sl st into 1st st to form ring, ch 1).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: [(1sc, 1pc) into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 3: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (18).

Rnd 4: [(1sc, 1pc) into next st, 1sc into next st, 1pc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (24).

Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join (30).

Fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail for tying.

Next, follow the instructions below for attaching your crochet potion cauldron spoon before continuing to the handles.

Attaching Spoon:

Begin by rotating your potion top so that the ‘right side’ is facing upwards and your joining seam is facing away from you, towards the back.

Retrieve the spoon piece you’ve set aside earlier, and choose where you would like your spoon to be placed.

The example crochet potion cauldron has the spoon placed between the 10th and 11th popcorn stitches in round 4.

Then, take your end tail leftover from fastening off your spoon and sew it through the top of your potion, from outside to inside, where you want you spoon to be attached.

Repeat this step with the beginning tail of your spoon, as well, by sewing your beginning tail through an adjacent stitch. Take care not to sew your beginning tail into the same space as your end tail!

Once both tails are threaded through the top of your potion, knot both tails together on the inside of your potion to secure your spoon. Trim any excess length.

Follow the instructions below for creating handles before continuing to round 6 of your crochet potion cauldron.

Crochet Potion Cauldron Handles:

With yarn C (dark gray), leave a beginning tail for sewing and chain 12.

Curve your chain around to form a circle. The first stitch of round 1 will be worked into the first chain you created at the very beginning of your chain.

Rnd 1: sl st into each st around (12).

Fasten off yarn C and leave an end tail for sewing, as well.

Repeat all steps 1 more time, for a total of 2 circle handles. Set aside for now.

With yarn C (dark gray), leave a beginning tail for sewing and chain 4.

Add 1 extra chain and then pull it tight to fasten off and leave an end tail for sewing, as well.

Repeat once more for a total of 2 short chains. Set aside for now.

These small chain lengths with be used at the top of your handles, as the loops on the sides of your cauldron that hold your handles.

Continue to round 6 of your crochet potion cauldron.

Crochet Potion Cauldron – Rounds 6 to 19:

Join yarn C (dark gray) by inserting your hook into the front loop only of the first stitch of the next round. Pull up a loop of yarn C and chain 1.

Tie the tails of both yarn B and yarn C together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends. Trim any excess length.

Rnd 6: 1sc into FLO of each st around, join, ch 1 (30).

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (30).

Rnd 8: in BLO of each st around, [1sc into each of next 4 sts, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnd 9: 1sc into BLO of each st around, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnd 10: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 4 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (30).

After rounds 6 to 10, you should now have a cauldron rim that goes up with the direction of your potion bubbles, flares out for a round, then folds and comes back down in the opposite direction.

Now that the top rim of the crochet potion cauldron is complete, we will be sealing off this rim for better shaping and rigidity.

This prevents your stuffing from distorting the top of your potion and gives the lip of your cauldron a clean and defined edge.

To achieve this, you will be working round 11 into both the top of round 10 and the back loops only that are leftover from round 5 (the last round of your potion) on the inside of your crochet potion cauldron, as seen below.

free crochet potion cauldron amigurumi pattern tutorial demonstration of how to seal the rim closed

If you have trouble with this method, you may instead try working round 11 into the front loops only of round 10.

Then, once round 11 is complete, take a long length of yarn C and sew the back loops only of round 10 and the back loops only of round 5 together on the inside of your cauldron.

For this method, sew around the entire circumference of the inside of your crochet potion cauldron, then secure with a knot and trim any excess.

Choose whichever method works best for you!

Rnd 11: [1sc into each of next 9 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 12: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 10 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnd 13: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnds 14 to 19 (6 rnds): repeat rnd 13 (36).

Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions for adding the eyes, mouth, blush, and handles before continuing.

Adding Eyes:

Using the example piece below as reference, insert both safety eyes through the front of your piece (on the opposite side from your joining seam).

The safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 16 and 17 and should sit 6 stitches apart, from the center of one eye to the center of the other.

how to attach safety eyes onto amigurumi free crochet tutorial

Adding Mouth:

Rotate your piece so that the beginning rounds face upwards and your last round faces downwards.

Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a mouth using black embroidery floss.

The mouth should be embroidered over top of round 18 and be centered between the eyes. The mouth will be 2 stitches wide and 1 round tall.

how to embroider a mouth onto amigurumi free crochet tutorial part one

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 2 stitches to the right from where you’ve inserted the left eye. Pull through and leave some tail for tying later.

Then, insert your needle again, 2 stitches to the right, and out again, 1 round down and 1 stitch to the left from where you’ve just inserted, and pull through.

how to embroider a mouth onto amigurumi free crochet tutorial part two

Pass your needle up and underneath the horizontal strand you’ve just created and pull through. Then, insert your needle back into the same space as you’ve last exited from.

Pull your thread through and tug it down slightly until it forms a V-shape. Gently tie both ends together inside your piece.

Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.

Adding Blush:

Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a blush line using pink embroidery floss or yarn next to each eye.

Each blush line should start 1 round down (between rounds 17 and 18) and 1 stitch outwards from where each eye was inserted, and span 1 stitch length outwards (away from the center of the face).

how to embroider blush onto amigurumi free crochet tutorial

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards from where you’ve inserted the eye.

Pull through, leaving some tail inside for tying later. Then, insert your needle back in, 1 more stitch outwards.

If using yarn, you may skip ahead to tying both ends together on the inside of your piece.

If using embroidery floss, pass your needle back out through the same space as you’ve last exited from and pull through. Reinsert your needle, again, 1 stitch outwards in the same place as before.

Repeat these last steps 3 more times, or until you are satisfied with the size of your blush. Then, gently tie both ends together on the inside of your piece.

Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.

Adding Handles:

free crochet potion cauldron amigurumi pattern tutorial demonstration of how the face should look

Retrieve the circle handles, as well as the short chain lengths, that you’ve set aside earlier.

Beginning with your circle pieces, decide where you want to attach the top of each handle. Double-check that the right side of the handles are facing outwards before you attach them.

The example crochet potion cauldron has the top of the handles attached over top of round 14, and located between the 9th and 10th stitches backwards from the center of the face on either side.

Thread the end tail leftover from fastening off of your circle handle, from outside to inside, through any 2 stitches (e.g., the 9th and 10th stitch) above your chosen round (e.g., round 14).

Then, thread your beginning tail through your cauldron in the same way, remaining between the same count of stitches outwards from the face, but this time beneath your chosen round, instead of above.

Knot both tails together on the inside of your piece to secure your handle, then cut any excess length.

Next, repeat these steps with the small chain length, as well. The end tail should be threaded through the same space as the end tail from your circle handle.

Likewise, the beginning tail should be sewn through the same space as the beginning tail from your handle. Allow your small chain length to wrap over top and around the top of your circular handle.

Finally, tie both tails together on the inside of your cauldron to secure your loop and repeat all steps on the opposite side of your crochet potion cauldron to attach your second handle.

Crochet Potion Cauldron – Rounds 20 to 25:

Continue to the next round and begin stuffing as you go.

Rnd 20: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 10 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 21: [1sc into each of next 9 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (30).

Rnd 22: [1pc into next st, 1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (24).

Rnd 23: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (18).

Rnd 24: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 25: [sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join (6).

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing closed.

Sewing Closed:

free crochet potion cauldron amigurumi pattern tutorial demonstration of how to sew closed

To sew the bottom hole closed, pass the needle, from front to back, through the front loop only of each stitch around and then pull tight. Secure your sewing with a knot, trim the tail, and sew in any remaining length.
