Terminology:
This free crochet candy apple amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
- dc = double crochet
- sk = skip
Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.
Special Stitch Instructions | Free Crochet Candy Apple Amigurumi
Please read through all special stitch instructions carefully before beginning your project, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.
This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.
Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.
Single Crochet:
This pattern uses a variation of the traditional single crochet stitch, sometimes referred to as the YU/YO (yarn under/yarn over) method.
Instead of yarning over before pulling through, this method utilizes a yarn under technique on the first pass of each stitch, as seen below.
Begin by inserting your hook into the next stitch, then yarn under (not over) as shown above. Pull through the stitch, then yarn over as normal and pull through both loops on your hook to complete your single crochet.
Using the above technique produces a slightly tighter and stiffer fabric than traditional single crochet stitches. This method minimizes holes between stitches, improves shaping, and decreases stitch slanting.
This pattern will still work with the traditional technique of single crochet stitches, so choose what works best for you—just be wary that your project may result in having slight visual differences than those shown in examples if using the traditional method.
Invisible Decrease:
This pattern uses a variation of the single crochet decrease stitch, often called an invisible decrease. This method produces a tighter stitch that improves shaping and blends in more seamlessly with regular stitches.
Insert your hook into the front loop only of the next stitch, then insert into the front loop only of the second stitch in the same way.
Yarn under (not over) as shown above and pull through both front loops. Yarn over as normal and pull through both loops on your hook to complete your invisible decrease.
Joining Rounds:
Unless otherwise stated, each round in this pattern is joined at the end with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, followed by one or more chain stitches.
For a cleaner seam, and to ensure that these stitches are not accidentally worked into later, tighten both the slip stitch and chain as shown below.
Hold your working loop firmly on your hook and pull up with your hook until your slip stitch is tight. Then, pull back on your working tail until your loop is back to fitting snugly around your hook.
Repeat these steps with the following one or more chain stitches before your next round, as well.
Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Follow the instructions below for adding a center pull string before continuing to round 28 of your crochet candy apple.
Adding Center Pull String:
To shape your apple and give the fruit its distinctive divot on the top, we will be adding a center pull string to the inside of your crochet candy apple, as seen below.
With your last round facing upwards, begin by holding the apple top (rounds 19 to 27) on both sides.
Next, push up on the crochet candy apple stick (rounds 1 to 18) from below until you can see the bottom of the stick in the center of the inside of your apple.
Then, take a long length (~16 in) of yarn C (tan) and sew it through the bottom of the stick, on the interior of your apple.
For best results, try sewing through two of the back loops leftover from round 18, one of either side of the stick, for a firmer hold.
Pull your thread through until both ends are of equal length, then knot them together securely at the base of the stick.
As you complete the rest of your crochet candy apple, make sure to allow this center pull string to hang freely and unobstructed.
When you add stuffing later, be sure to keep the pull string in the center of your apple and try your best to add your stuffing evenly around it.
Additionally, take care to pull up on the string as you stuff. This will help keep the top divot of your apple in place and ensure that you are not overstuffing and losing your shape.
Crochet Candy Apple – Rounds 28 to 35:
Join yarn C (tan) by inserting your hook into the last stitch of round 27 and pulling up a loop of yarn C.
Tie the tails of both yarn B and yarn C together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends, then trim any excess length.
Rnd 28: sl st into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
For best results, take extra care to not work your slip stitches too tightly! If you find that your slip stitches are cinching your crochet candy apple, try loosening your tension or sizing up your hook for that round.
However, if you find this slip stitch method too difficult, you may also opt to omit them entirely. Instead, you may skip round 28.
If you omit the round of slip stitches, join your new yarn color in the next round by inserting your hook into the first stitch of the round. Pull up a loop of yarn C and chain 1.
Tie the tails of both yarn B and yarn C together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends, then trim any excess length. Then, work the single crochets of your next round into both loops as you normally would.
Choose whichever method works best for you!
Optional: for a cleaner color change, try working the stitches in round 29 through both the back loop of each slip stitch AND the front loop of round 27 directly behind, as seen above.
Rnd 29: 1sc into BLO of each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 30: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 31: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 32: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 33: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 34: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 35: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (36).
Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions for adding the eyes, mouth, and blush before continuing to round 36 of your crochet candy apple.
Adding Eyes:
Using the example piece below as reference, insert both safety eyes through the front of your piece (on the opposite side from your joining seam).
The safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 32 and 33* and should sit 6 stitches apart, from the center of one eye to the center of the other.
*Be sure when counting your rounds to include your round of slip stitches, as it blends in!
Adding Mouth:
Rotate your piece so that the beginning rounds face upwards and your last round faces downwards.
Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a mouth using black embroidery floss.
The mouth should be embroidered over top of round 34* and be centered between the eyes. The mouth will be 2 stitches wide and 1 round tall.
*Be sure when counting your rounds to include your round of slip stitches, as it blends in!
Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 2 stitches to the right from where you’ve inserted the left eye. Pull through and leave some tail for tying later.
Then, insert your needle again, 2 stitches to the right, and out again, 1 round down and 1 stitch to the left from where you’ve just inserted, and pull through.
Pass your needle up and underneath the horizontal strand you’ve just created and pull through. Then, insert your needle back into the same space as you’ve last exited from.
Pull your thread through and tug it down slightly until it forms a V-shape. Gently tie both ends together inside your piece.
Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.
Adding Blush:
Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a blush line using pink embroidery floss or yarn next to each eye.
Each blush line should start 1 round down (between rounds 33 and 34*) and 1 stitch outwards from where each eye was inserted, and span 1 stitch length outwards (away from the center of the face).
*Be sure when counting your rounds to include your round of slip stitches, as it blends in!
Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards from where you’ve inserted the eye.
Pull through, leaving some tail inside for tying later. Then, insert your needle back in, 1 more stitch outwards.
If using yarn, you may skip ahead to tying both ends together on the inside of your piece.
If using embroidery floss, pass your needle back out through the same space as you’ve last exited from and pull through. Reinsert your needle, again, 1 stitch outwards in the same place as before.
Repeat these last steps 3 more times, or until you are satisfied with the size of your blush. Then, gently tie both ends together on the inside of your piece.
Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.
Crochet Candy Apple – Rounds 36 to 38:
Continue to the next round and begin stuffing as you go.
Don’t forget, when adding your stuffing, to keep the pull string in the center of your apple and try your best to add the stuffing evenly around it.
Additionally, take care to pull generously on the string as you stuff. This will help keep the top divot of your apple in place and to ensure that you are not overstuffing and losing your divot.
Rnd 36: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 10 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (33).
Rnd 37: [1sc into each of next 9 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (30).
Rnd 38: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 6 times, do not join (24).
Follow the instructions below for adding the caramel ooze to your crochet candy apple before continuing to round 39.
However, you may also opt to omit the ooze embellishment and finish your crochet candy apple with only the apple shape. If so, skip ahead to round 39.
Adding Ooze:
The caramel ooze (or candy ooze, depending on your color scheme) embellishment will be worked directly off of round 38 of your crochet candy apple by adding and then working into a round of slip stitches.
Take care when working round 2 of the caramel ooze to work into the previous round of slip stitches only.
Do not work into tops of the stitches from round 38 of your apple. You will be rejoining and working back into these stitches in round 39 of the apple.
Alternatively, if you find this method difficult, you may skip the round of slip stitches and simply work round 2 of the caramel ooze into the front loops only of round 38. Then, work round 39 of the apple into the back loops only of round 38, instead.
Choose whichever method works best for you!
Rnd 1: sl st into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 2: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into next st, sk next st, 7dc into next st, sk next st] 2 times, 1sc into next st, sk next st, 7dc into next st, sk next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st, do not join (39).
Rnd 3: sl st into each st around (39).
Fasten off and weave in tail. Then, continue to round 39 of your crochet candy apple.
Crochet Candy Apple – Rounds 39 to 41:
If you chose to omit the caramel ooze embellishment, continue to round 39 below, as normal.
Otherwise, rejoin yarn C (tan) by inserting your hook into the top of the first stitch from round 38, behind the round of slip stitches you’ve worked the ooze off of. Pull up a loop of yarn C and chain 1.
Knot the beginning tail of yarn C on the interior of your piece to secure your end, then trim any excess length.
You will be working round 39 into the top of round 38 as normal and as though the ooze embellishment is not there.
Additionally, remember to let your center pull string continue to hang freely out of the bottom of your crochet candy apple as you begin to close your apple.
Rnd 39: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 40: [1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 41: [sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, do not join (6).
Before joining your last round, take one strand of your center pull string and pull it down to sit between your first and last stitch in round 41.
Make sure that the other strand of your center pull string remains in the center hole above.
Then, join your last round with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, completing the round and simultaneously separating the two strands of your center pull string so that they are not exiting from the same space.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing closed.
Sewing Closed:
To sew the bottom hole closed, thread the end tail from fastening off of round 41 through your yarn needle. Ignore the center pull strands for now, but take care not to get them tangled with your end tail as you sew closed.
Then, pass the needle, from front to back, through the front loop only of each stitch around and then pull tight. Secure your sewing with a knot, trim the tail, and sew in any remaining length.
Lastly, take the center pull strands and tie both strands together on the bottom of your crochet candy apple.
You do not need to force the strands, just make sure to tie them just tight enough to keep the top divot of your apple secure.
Finally, trim and weave in both strands to finish your piece!
