So, without further ado, here is the pattern for the Candy Corn Keychain, part 4 of 7 in our Scrap Buster Keychains collection!

Pattern Information | Free Crochet Candy Corn Keychain

This free crochet candy corn keychain pattern has a difficulty rating of intermediate.

The finished dimensions are 2.5 inches (height) by 2 inches (width) by 1.25 inches (depth) before adding the keychain clip.*

You may also make your pieces larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your yarn weight and/or hook size, respectively.

*Finished dimensions are calculated from a model using medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, the YU/YO method and the following gauge: 18 sc x 21 rows = 4 inches.

And don’t forget to add your project on Ravelry!

Supplies:

  • Size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • Medium (4) weight yarn in 3 colors:
    • Yarn A – white (example uses Red Heart Super Saver: Soft White)
    • Yarn B – orange (Big Twist Value: Orange)
    • Yarn C – yellow (Big Twist Value: Varsity Gold)
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Keychain clip in chosen style/color
  • 6 mm jump rings (x3)*
  • Pliers (x2)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

*6 mm jump rings are the minimum size required for the example gauge. However, larger sizes may be needed depending on your chosen keychain clip style.

Terminology:

This free crochet candy corn keychain pattern uses English (US) terminology:

  • st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
  • ch = chain stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
  • BLO = back loop only

Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.

Special Stitch Instructions:

Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ page before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

This free crochet candy corn keychain pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:

  • Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
  • Invisible Decrease
  • Joining Rounds

This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Candy Corn Keychain

Crochet Candy Corn Keychain:

With yarn A (white), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (8).

Rnd 3: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (10).

Rnd 4: [1sc into each of next 4 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join (12).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a short tail for tying.

The example crochet candy corn keychain utilizes an extra row of slip stitches between each color change, in order to achieve a clean, straight seam between colors.

For an easier alternative, you may choose to skip rounds 5 and 9 entirely and work the subsequent rounds (rounds 6 and 10) into both loops of the previous round, instead.

If you are opting for this easier method, you will be joining your new color into the first stitch of your previous round.

Otherwise, for the special slip stitch method, join yarn B (orange) by inserting your hook into the last stitch of your previous round and pulling up a loop of yarn B.

Tie the tails of both yarn A and yarn B together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends.

Take care to work your slips stitches in rounds 5 and 9 loosely, to prevent your project from cinching. You may also temporarily size up your hook for the next round, if needed.

Also, be careful not to skip your last stitch in rounds 5 and 9! Your last slip stitch should be worked into the same stitch as where you’ve pulled up your first loop to join.

Rnd 5: sl st into BLO of each st around, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 6: in BLO of each sl st around, [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 5 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (14).

Rnd 7: [1sc into each of next 6 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (16).

Rnd 8: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 7 sts] 2 times, join (18).

Fasten off yarn B and join yarn C using the same chosen method as before.

Rnd 9: sl st into BLO of each st around, ch 1 (18).

Rnd 10: [1sc into each of next 8 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (20).

Rnd 11: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 9 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (22).

Rnd 12: [1sc into each of next 10 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (24).

Rnd 13: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 6 times, join (18).

Fasten off yarn C and leave an 8-12 inch tail, or a tail long enough for sewing a length of 9 stitches.

Stuff your piece until it is full, then continue to the instructions for sewing your crochet candy corn keychain closed next.

Sewing Closed:

free amigurumi tutorial of how to sew the bottom closed

To sew your crochet candy corn keychain closed, begin by pinching the opening together so that the bottom edge creates 2 parallel lines of 9 stitches each, with your end tail positioned at one far end of the lines.

Then, pass your needle, from front to back, through each matching pair of stitches across until the hole is closed in a straight line.

Secure your sewing with a knot, trim the tail, then sew in any remaining length.

Attaching Keychain:

To make your amigurumi into a keychain, like the sample piece below, begin by splitting your first jump ring with pliers and locate the stitch on your piece that you would like to be the topmost point.

The example crochet candy corn keychain is attached to the clip in round 1 of the white top.

Insert one end of the jump ring through the surface of your piece on one side of your chosen stitch, then out again on the other side of that stitch.

Then, use your pliers to bend the jump ring securely closed. Repeat these steps with a second jump ring onto the bottom of your keychain clip.

Finally, connect your amigurumi and keychain clip together by threading a third jump ring through both of your first two jump rings, and bending it closed to create a chain of three jump rings total.

The length of your chain can be modified to be longer or shorter by using more or fewer jump rings, respectively. You may also connect your jump rings onto a premade chain, instead.

Alternatively, you may also sew your piece onto the keychain clip with a length of yarn, or create a length of macramé or braid to connect your pieces together, as well.

Choose whichever method works best for you! Just be sure to choose components that are durable enough for your intended use!
