Crochet Candy Keychain | Free Pattern

Sweetened into this free crochet candy keychain pattern are all the sugary scares of Halloween lore—remnants of taffy stuck in your teeth, jack-o-lanterns glowing along a porch as you snatch that last chocolate bar, and distant screaming… but from fun or fright?

Whether you are looking to make a simple project for a crafter’s market, or a quick gift for a friend, this free crochet candy keychain pattern is the perfect project to sink your hook into and use up your yarn scraps!

So, without further ado, here is the pattern for the Candy Keychain, part 5 of 7 in our Scrap Buster Keychains collection!

Pattern Information | Free Crochet Candy Keychain

This free crochet candy keychain pattern has a difficulty rating of intermediate.

The finished dimensions are 1.75 inches (height) by 3 inches (width) by 1.75 inches (depth) before adding the keychain clip.*

You may also make your pieces larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your yarn weight and/or hook size, respectively.

*Finished dimensions are calculated from a model using medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, the YU/YO method and the following gauge: 18 sc x 21 rows = 4 inches.

And don’t forget to add your project on Ravelry!

Terminology:

This free crochet candy keychain pattern uses English (US) terminology:

  • st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
  • ch = chain stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
  • dc = double crochet
  • FLO = front loop only
  • BLO = back loop only

Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.

Special Stitch Instructions:

Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ page before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

You can also watch our amigurumi techniques video tutorial for all of our tips and tricks for improving your project!

This free crochet candy keychain pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:

  • Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
  • Invisible Decrease
  • Joining Rounds

This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Candy Keychain

Crochet Candy Wrapper Beginning:

With yarn A (white), leave a tail for tying and make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: 1sc into BLO of each st around, do not join (6).

Rnd 3: (sl st, ch 2, 1dc, ch 2, sl st) into each of next 6 sts, join (42).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a tail for sewing.

With a needle, sew your end tail through the opposite side of the last round of your crochet candy wrapper, so that the ruffled edge folds together like a taco.

Secure your sewing with a knot to your beginning tail, or onto the interior of the wrapper, trim your tails, and weave in any excess length.

Crochet Candy Keychain:

The rest of the crochet candy keychain can be worked directly off of the wrapper, into the front loops only that are left over from round 1.

Alternatively, you may also start with a new beginning round (6sc into ring, join, ch 1), and work round 1 below into the back loops only, instead.

If choosing this method, you may sew both pieces together with a length of yarn B afterwards, through the front loops only that are left over from round 1 of each piece.

Otherwise, join yarn B (purple) by inserting your hook into the front loop only of the first stitch of your next round. Pull up a loop of yarn B and chain 1.

Rnd 1: 2sc into FLO of each st around, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 2: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join (18).

Fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail for tying.

Join yarn C (pink) by inserting your hook into the first stitch of your next round. Pull up a loop of yarn C and chain 1.

Tie the tails of both yarn B and yarn C together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends, then trim any excess length.

Rnd 3: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 5 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (21).

Rnd 4: 1sc into each st around, join (21).

Fasten off yarn C and join yarn B using the same method as before.

Rnd 5: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (21).

Rnd 6: 1sc into each st around, join (21).

Fasten off yarn B and join yarn C using the same method as before.

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (21).

Rnd 8: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 5 sts] 3 times, join (18).

Fasten off yarn C and join yarn B using the same method as before.

Rnd 9: [1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 10: [sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join (6).

Fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail for tying.

Crochet Candy Wrapper End:

Just like the candy center, the wrapper end can be worked directly off of the rest of the crochet candy keychain, into the front loops only of round 10 of the striped center.

Alternatively, you may also start with a new beginning round (6sc into ring, join, ch 1), and work round 1 below into the back loops only, instead.

Afterwards, you may sew both pieces together with a length of yarn B, using the front loops only that are left over from round 1 of the wrapper end and the front loops only of round 10 of the striped center.

Otherwise, leave a short beginning tail for tying and join yarn A (white) by inserting your hook into the front loop only of your first stitch of your next round. Pull up a loop of yarn A and chain 1.

Rnd 1: 1sc into FLO of each st around, do not join (6).

Rnd 2: (sl st, ch 2, 1dc, ch 2, sl st) into each of next 6 sts, join (42).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a tail for sewing.

With a needle, sew your end tail through the opposite side of the last round of your crochet candy wrapper to close the top edge of your piece.

Secure your sewing with a knot to your beginning tail, or onto the interior of the wrapper, trim your tails, and weave in any excess length.

Attaching Keychain:

To make your amigurumi into a keychain, like the sample piece below, begin by splitting your first jump ring with pliers and locate the stitch on your piece that you would like to be the topmost point.

The example crochet candy keychain is attached to the clip in the seam between rounds 5 and 6 of the striped center.

Insert one end of the jump ring through the surface of your piece on one side of your chosen stitch, then out again on the other side of that stitch.

Then, use your pliers to bend the jump ring securely closed. Repeat these steps with a second jump ring onto the bottom of your keychain clip.

Finally, connect your amigurumi and keychain clip together by threading a third jump ring through both of your first two jump rings, and bending it closed to create a chain of three jump rings total.

The length of your chain can be modified to be longer or shorter by using more or fewer jump rings, respectively. You may also connect your jump rings onto a premade chain, instead.

Alternatively, you may also sew your piece onto the keychain clip with a length of yarn, or create a length of macramé or braid to connect your pieces together, as well.

Choose whichever method works best for you! Just be sure to choose components that are durable enough for your intended use!
