Terminology:
This free crochet sunflower garland pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- ch-sp = chain space
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- dc-CL = double crochet cluster*
- tr = treble crochet
- ps = puff stitch*
*Please read through the special instructions for these stitches before beginning, as they are unique for this crochet sunflower garland.
Also, please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.
Special Instructions – Double Crochet Cluster:
A double crochet cluster is a series of double crochet stitches that are worked only partially, and then finished off together as one stitch at the end.
This stitch is worked similarly to a double crochet decrease. The main difference, however, is that cluster stitches are worked entirely into one stitch or space and therefore do not decrease your stitch count.
Specifically, this crochet sunflower garland uses a 2 double crochet cluster (2dc-CL), as seen below.
Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch or chain space. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook only.
Again, yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch or chain space as before. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook only.
Lastly, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook to complete your 2 double crochet cluster.
Special Instructions – Puff Stitch:
This crochet sunflower garland uses a puff stitch comprised of 4 pull-throughs, as seen below.
Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch or chain space. Yarn over and pull through, then stretch your new loop up to the full height of your stitch.
Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch or chain space as before. Again, yarn over and pull through, then stretch your new loop up to the full height of your stitch.
Repeat these last steps (YO, insert, YO and pull through, stretch loop) 2 more times, for a total of 9 loops on your hook.
Lastly, yarn over and pull through all 9 loops and chain 1 to secure your puff stitch.
Please note that this last chain stitch is a part of the puff stitch only. It will not count as a separate stitch in total stitch counts.
Additionally, any chain stitches that immediately follow a puff stitch in the pattern should be treated as a separate sequence that does not include this chain stitch in that count.
Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Sunflower Garland
Crochet Sunflower Motif:
With yarn A (brown), ch 4, sl st into 1st st to form a ring, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 12dc into ring, sl st into 1st dc to join, ch 2 (12).
Be sure to review the special stitch instructions for the puff stitch above, as it may be unique to this pattern.
When working round 2, don’t forget to add that extra chain stitch to secure each puff stitch! In other words, each chain space should contain 2 chains total when including the chain from the puff stitch.
Rnd 2: [1ps into next st, ch 1] 12 times, sl st into 1st ch-sp to join (24).
Fasten off yarn A and weave in tails.
Join yarn B (yellow) by inserting your hook into the first chain space of your next round. Leaving a short tail for weaving in, pull up a loop of yarn B and ch 2.
Round 3 will begin in the same chain space as where you’ve joined your new color.
Rnd 3: [2dc-CL into next ch-sp, ch 2, 2dc-CL into same ch-sp] 12 times, sl st into 1st dc-CL to join (48).
Rnd 4: [(1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc) into next ch-sp, sl st between next 2 dc-CL] 6 times, join (96).
Fasten off yarn B and weave in all tails. Set aside for now.
Repeat rounds 1 to 4, two more times, for a total of three crochet sunflower motifs.
Alternatively, you may also make more sunflowers in order to create an even longer garland!
Crochet Sunflower Leaf:
With yarn C (green), chain 6.
Rnd 1: 3dc into 3rd ch from hook, 1dc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 2sc into next st, working into other side of ch sts, 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into next st, 3dc into next st, sl st into 1st dc to join, ch 2 (13).
Rnd 2: 2dc into each of next 3 sts, 1dc into next sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, (1sc, 1dc, 1sc) into next st, 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into next st, 2dc into each of next 3 sts, ch 2, sl st into same st as last dc (25).
Fasten off yarn C and weave in tails. Set aside for now.
Repeat round 1 and 2, three more times, for a total of four leaves.
Alternatively, if you’ve made more than three crochet sunflower motifs, be sure to make the same number of leaves as sunflowers, plus one additional leaf.
Attaching Crochet Sunflower Garland:
With yarn C (green), work row 1 below to attach your crochet sunflower motifs and leaves into a garland.
When attaching each leaf to the garland, you will be working one single crochet into the center of the broader end of the leaf, into the slip stitch you used to join round 1 together.
Similarly, when attaching each crochet sunflower motif, you will be working one single crochet into the treble crochet of any petal.
If you plan to use your beginning and end tails to tie up your garland, be sure to leave some tail at the beginning of your work.
Row 1: ch 24, 1sc into next leaf, [ch 24, 1sc into next sunflower, ch 24, 1sc into next leaf] 3 times, ch 24 (199).
The pattern given above is for the example garland, as seen in photos, which consists of four leaves and three crochet sunflower motifs alternating across.
To make the garland longer, simply repeat the bracketed sequence in the pattern once more for each additional repetition of leaf and sunflower you’d like to attach.
You may also lengthen or shorten the distance between leaves and sunflowers by changing each of the ‘ch 24’ sequences.
Once all of your leaves and crochet sunflower motifs are attached and your garland reaches your desired length, fasten off yarn C and leave a tail for either tying or sewing.
Finally, you may use your beginning and end tails to tie up your garland, or weave them into your chain for a more finished look. Choose whichever works best for you!
