Terminology:
This free crochet spider amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
- sc3tog = single crochet 3 together (over the span of 3 stitches)
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.

Special Stitch Instructions:
Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.
You can also watch our amigurumi techniques video tutorial for all of our tips and tricks for improving your project!
This free crochet spider amigurumi pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:
- Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
- Invisible Decrease
- Joining Rounds
This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.
Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Crochet Spider Pincers:
With yarn A (green), leave a short beginning tail for sewing and chain 5.
Row 1: beginning in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc into each st across (4).
Fasten off and leave a short end tail for sewing, as well. Set aside for now.

Repeat all steps 1 more time, for a total of 2 pincers. Then, continue to your crochet spider head.
Crochet Spider Head – Rounds 1 to 13:
With yarn A (green), make a magic ring (or ch 4, sl st into 1st st to form ring, ch 1).
Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 2: 2sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 3: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into next st, 3sc into next st, 1sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (19).
Rnd 4: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 3sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (26).
Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 3sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 13: sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 30 sts, 2sc into next st, join, ch 1 (33).
Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions below for adding the eyes and pincers before continuing to round 14 of your crochet spider head.
Adding Eyes:
Rotate your piece so that the beginning rounds face upwards and your last round faces downwards.
Using the photo below as reference, insert four safety eyes across the front of your crochet spider head.
The front of the head should be on the flattest side (between your 3sc increases in rounds 3 to 5), a quarter turn before your joining seam.
The 10 mm safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 10 and 11 and should sit 4 stitches apart, from the center of one eye to the center of the other.
The 8 mm safety eyes should be inserted 1 round above (between rounds 9 and 10) and 2 stitches outwards (away from the center of the face) from each 10 mm eye, and should sit 8 stitches apart.

Adding Pincers:
Retrieve both pincers that you’ve set aside earlier.
Align your first pincer below the eyes on either side of the face and so that the side with your beginning and end tails faces outwards (away from the center of the face) and the right side of your stitches are facing forwards.
Then, take the top tail on your pincer and sew it through the front of the head, 2 rounds directly below where you’ve inserted one of your 8 mm safety eyes.
Next, take the bottom tail on your pincer and sew it through the head, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards from where you’ve just sewn the top tail.
Once both tails are threaded through to the inside of your head, knot both tails together on the inside of your spider to secure your pincer. Trim any excess length.

Repeat all steps with your second pincer on the opposite side of the face. Then, continue to round 14 of your crochet spider head.
Crochet Spider Head – Rounds 14 to 16:
Continue to the next round and begin stuffing as you go.
Rnd 14: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 3 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (26).
Rnd 15: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (19).
Rnd 16: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into next st, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into next st] 2 times, join (12).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a short tail for tying. Set aside for now.

Crochet Spider Legs:

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 2: 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 3: 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 4: 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 5: 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 6: 1sc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into next st, join (6).
Fasten off yarn A and weave in end. Set aside for now.

Repeat rounds 1 to 6, 7 more times, for a total of 8 arms. Then, continue to round 1 of your crochet spider body.

Rnd 11: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 12: 1sc into each st around, join (12).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a long (~3 ft) tail for sewing. Do not stuff yet.
Follow the instructions below for attaching the legs onto the body before stuffing.
Attaching Legs:
Retrieve all 8 crochet spider legs that you’ve set aside earlier.
To make attaching the legs to the body a bit easier, we will first be sewing the legs into 2 lines of 4 legs each, as seen below.

Begin by taking 4 of your crochet spider legs and placing them in a row, as seen above.
Flatten the open end, or last round, of each leg and align them together in a stack so that the open ends are squeezed together and the opposite ends are all curving in the same direction.
With a long length of yarn A (green), leave a tail for tying and sew up through all 4 legs along one side of the flattened edges. Then, sew back down through all 4 legs along the opposite side of the flattened edges.
Pull your yarn snug as you sew so that all 4 legs converge tightly together along the sewn end, but fan out at the opposite ends of the legs.
Then, align your stack of legs so that the sewn edges are placed vertically down the sides of the body, as seen below.
The example crochet spider has the top of the legs aligned with the top round of the body. Both stacks of legs are separated by 4 stitches across the back of that round, then sewn straight down along the same column of stitches.

Secure your sewing with a knot, then weave in all tails. Repeat all steps with the last 4 legs onto the opposite side of the body, as well.
Optionally, if you’d like to add a bit more stylization to your crochet spider, you may sew the bottom two legs on each side together and also further secure them along the bottom of the body.
This will allow your spider legs to have a bit more separation between the top 2 and bottom 2 legs on each side, which more closely mimics the anatomy of some spider breeds.
Not all breeds have this anatomical separation, so choose whichever style fits your visual preference!
Attaching Head:
Retrieve the head set aside earlier and align it in your desired direction on top of the body.
With the long end tail leftover from fastening off of the body, sew around the entire circumference of the head and body, stitch by stitch, to connect both pieces together.

If you have trouble getting your needle into the crevice between the head and neck, try sewing very loosely, as shown above, leaving a large gap between the head and the body for you to more easily maneuver in.
Then, once you’ve completed sewing around the full circumference, you may go back and tighten each strand of your sewing individually. Just be careful to tighten the strands in the same sequence as you’ve sewn them!
Once your head and body are connected, secure your sewing with a knot to the end tail from the head, or to a nearby stitch, trim your tail, and weave in any excess length.
