Terminology:
This free crochet Christmas peppermint amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
- dc = double crochet
- rep = repeat
Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.

Special Stitch Instructions
Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

This free crochet Christmas peppermint amigurumi pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:
- Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
- Joining Rounds
- Changing Colors Mid-Round
This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.
Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.
Changing Colors Mid-Round:
This free crochet Christmas peppermint pattern uses a mid-round color changing technique, as seen below, to create its bold spiraling pattern.

This color changing method begins in the stitch immediately before the stitch that you want to be a different color. Begin this stitch as normal by inserting into the next stitch (or two stitches, if decreasing), yarning under, and pulling through.
Before the last pull through, drop your current color and instead grab the color you want to change to. Yarn over this new color and pull through both loops.
After dropping a color, you do not need to cut it off. Instead, you may allow your yarn to ‘float’ in the back, or interior, of your work until you are ready to pick it up again, or work over them as you go. Just be careful not to let these strands be pulled too tight when you pick them back up!
Alternatively, you may also create a moderate amount of slack in your yarn between dropping it and picking it back up. Later, you may then cut these strands and tie them together in pairs to secure your color changes.
Choose whichever method works best for you!

Crochet Peppermint Wrapper Twists:
With yarn A (white), leave a beginning tail for sewing and chain 3.
Rnd 1: 12dc into 3rd ch from hook, sl st into 1st dc to join, ch 2 (12).
Rnd 2: 2dc into next st, 3dc into each of next 11 sts, sl st into 1st dc to join (35).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a tail for sewing.

With your needle, thread your end tail, from front to back, through both loops of your last double crochet.
Then, count 7 stitches backwards and thread your tail through again, from front to back. Allow the top edge of your piece to fold outwards as you pull your yarn tight.
Repeat this method through every 7th stitch around until you reach the beginning, for a total of 5 ruffles around your wrapper twist.
Pull tight and secure with a knot. Trim the tail and sew in any excess length. Do not weave in the beginning tail yet, as you’ll use it to sew on your twists later.
Repeat all steps, one more time, for a total of two wrapper twists. Set aside for now and continue to round 1 of your crochet Christmas peppermint below.

Crochet Peppermint – Rounds 1 to 10:
With yarn A (white), chain 2. Have yarn B (red) on standby, as well.
The example crochet Christmas peppermint begins color changing during the first round, which can difficult for some crocheters since the beginning round is so small.
For an optional, easier variation, you may instead replace round 1 with a standard round using only one color (6sc into 2nd ch from hook, join, ch 1).
If choosing this method, you’ll begin color changing during the second round instead, then continue as normal. Choose whichever method works best for you!
Rnd 1: 1sc into 2nd ch from hook and change to yarn B, 1sc into same ch and change to yarn A, [1sc into same ch and change to yarn B, 1sc into same ch and change to yarn A] 2 times, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: [*2sc into next st* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 3: [*2sc into next st, 1sc into next st* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 4: [*2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 5: [*2sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (30).
Rnd 6: [*2sc into each of next 2 sts, 1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 7: [*2sc into each of next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (42).

Rnd 8: [*2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 4 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (42).
Rnd 9: rep rnd 8 (42).
Rnd 10: rep rnd 8 (42).
Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions next for adding eyes mouth, and wrapper twists before continuing to round 11 of your crochet Christmas peppermint.
Adding Eyes:
With your crochet Christmas peppermint rotated to any position of your liking, insert both safety eyes through the front of your piece and level with the center of your candy.
Each of your safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 3 and 4 so that they sit the length of 6 rounds apart from each other.

Adding Mouth:
Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a mouth using black embroidery floss.
The mouth should be embroidered over top of round 3 and be centered between and below the eyes. The mouth will be 2 stitches wide and 1 round tall.

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 2 stitches to the right from where you've inserted the left eye. Pull through and leave some tail for tying later.
Then, insert your needle again, 2 stitches to the right, and out again, 1 round down and 1 stitch to the left from where you've just inserted, and pull through.

Pass your needle up and underneath the horizontal strand you’ve just created and pull through. Then, insert your needle back into the same space as you've last exited from.
Pull your thread through and tug it down slightly until it forms a V-shape. Gently tie both ends together inside your piece.
Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.
Adding Wrapper Twists:
Retrieve both wrapper twists you’ve set aside earlier.
Align your first twist over top of round 9 of the peppermint on either side and so that it is level with the eyes and the center of the candy.

With the tail left over from the beginning of the twist, sew into the peppermint between rounds 9 and 10, then out again 1 round directly down, between rounds 9 and 8.
Next, sew through the bottom of round 1 of the wrapper twist, between any two double crochets on one side, then out between any two stitches on the opposite side.
Then, repeat these steps one or more times, sewing through the same locations, to further secure your twist.
To finish off your sewing, thread your tail through to the inside of your candy once more and secure your sewing with a knot to the interior of your piece. Trim any excess length after knotting.
Repeat all steps with the second twist on the opposite side of your crochet Christmas peppermint candy, then continue to round 11 below.
Crochet Peppermint – Rounds 11 to 16:

Remove your stitch marker and continue to the next round. Begin stuffing as you go.
Rnd 11: [*2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 12: [*2sc into next st, 1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (30).
Rnd 13: [*2sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 14: [*1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 15: [*1sc into next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join, ch 1 (12).

If you substituted round 1 of your crochet Christmas peppermint with the easier alternative at the beginning of the pattern, the next round should also be altered to match.
To do this, simply replace the next round with a standard round ([sc2tog over next 2 sts] 6 times, join) using only yarn A.
Otherwise, for the advanced version shown in the example photos, work round 16 below as normal.
Rnd 16: [*sc2tog over next 2 sts* and change to yarn B, rep from * to * 1 time and change to yarn A] 3 times, join (6).
Fasten off yarn B (red) and leave a tail for tying. Secure the tail with a knot to the inside of the piece, then trim any excess length.
Then, fasten off A (white) and leave a longer tail for sewing closed.
Sewing Closed:

To sew the back hole closed, pass your needle, from front to back, beneath the front loop only of each stitch around and then pull tight.
Secure your sewing with a knot onto a nearby stitch, trim the tail, and then sew in any remaining length.
