So, without further ado, here is the pattern for the Ghost Pocket Pet, part 4 of 5 in the Halloween Pocket Pets collection!

Pattern Information | Free Crochet Sheet Ghost Amigurumi

This free crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern has a difficulty rating of advanced.

The finished dimensions are 4.5 inches (height) by 3.5 inches (width) by 2.5 inches (depth).*

You may also make your pieces larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your yarn weight and/or hook size, respectively.

*Finished dimensions are calculated from a model using medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, the YU/YO method and the following gauge: 18 sc x 21 rows = 4 inches.

And don’t forget to add your project on Ravelry!

Terminology:

This free crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:

  • st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
  • ch = chain stitch
  • ch-sp = chain space
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
  • sc3tog = single crochet 3 together (over the span of 3 stitches)
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • FLO = front loop only
  • BLO = back loop only
  • sk = skip

Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.

In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.

Special Stitch Instructions

Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

You can also watch our amigurumi techniques video tutorial for all of our tips and tricks for improving your project!

This free crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:

  • Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
  • Invisible Decrease
  • Joining Rounds

This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Sheet Ghost Amigurumi

Crochet Sheet Ghost Head – Rounds 1 to 13:

With yarn A (white), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: 2sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 3: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into next st, 3sc into next st, 1sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (19).

Rnd 4: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 3sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (26).

Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 3sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 6: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (33).

Rnds 7 to 12 (6 rnds): repeat rnd 6 (33).

Rnd 13: sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 30 sts, 2sc into next st, join, ch 1 (33).

Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions below for adding the eyes, mouth, eyebrows, and blush before continuing to round 14 of your crochet sheet ghost head.

Adding Eyes:

Using the example piece below as reference, insert both safety eyes through the center of the front of your crochet sheet ghost head.

The front of the head should be on the flattest side (between your 3sc increases in rounds 3 to 5), a quarter turn before your joining seam.

The safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 10 and 11 and should sit 6 stitches apart.

how to attach safety eyes onto amigurumi tutorial

Adding Mouth:

The mouth should be embroidered over round 12 be centered between the eyes. The mouth will be 1 round tall.

crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to embroider the mouth onto the face

With black yarn and a needle, begin by inserting your needle, from inside to outside, 1 round down and 3 stitches to the right from where you’ve inserted the left eye.

Pull through and leave some tail inside for tying later.

Next, insert your needle back in, 1 round directly beneath where you’ve just exited, and pull through to create a vertical line that is 1 round tall in the center of the face.

Repeat these steps, exiting 1 round directly above and inserting again 1 round below, one or more times, until you are satisfied with the size of the mouth.

Then, remove your needle and tie both tails together on the inside of your piece, taking care to not pull your embroidery too tight as you tie your ends. Trim any excess length after knotting.

Adding Eyebrows:

The eyebrows should be embroidered over round 9, placed diagonally, slightly above and outwards from each eye, as seen below.

crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to embroider the eyebrows onto the face

With black embroidery floss and a needle, begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 2 rounds directly above where you’ve inserted the left eye.

Pull through and leave some tail inside for tying later.

Next, insert your needle back in, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards (away from the center of the face) from where you’ve just exited, and pull through to create a diagonal line above the eye.

Then, remove your needle and tie both tails together on the inside of your piece. Take extra care to not pull your embroidery too tight as you’re tying, then finish by trimming any excess length after knotting.

Repeat all steps to create a second eyebrow above the right eye, mirroring the eyebrow on the left.

Adding Blush (Optional):

If desired, you may also add two small blush spots onto your ghost’s face, as seen on the example crochet sheet ghost for color variation 2, to give your piece an extra touch of personality!

The example ghost in the tutorial images (color variation 1), however, omits the blush spots in order to be more in the style of a true sheet ghost, so choose whichever option best suits your visual preference!

Rotate your piece so that the beginning rounds face upwards and your last round faces downwards.

Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a blush line using pink embroidery floss or yarn next to each eye.

Each blush line should start 1 round down (between rounds 11 and 12) and 1 stitch outwards from where each eye was inserted, and span 1 stitch length outwards (away from the center of the face).

how to embroider blush onto amigurumi tutorial

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards from where you’ve inserted the eye.

Pull through, leaving some tail inside for tying later. Then, insert your needle back in, 1 more stitch outwards.

If using yarn, you may skip ahead to tying both ends together on the inside of your piece.

If using embroidery floss, pass your needle back out through the same space as you’ve last exited from and pull through. Reinsert your needle, again, 1 stitch outwards in the same place as before.

Repeat these last steps 3 more times, or until you are satisfied with the size of your blush. Then, gently tie both ends together on the inside of your piece.

Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.

Crochet Sheet Ghost Head – Rounds 14 to 16:

Remove your stitch marker and continue to the next round. Begin stuffing as you go.

Rnd 14: in BLO of each st around, [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 3 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (26).

Rnd 15: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, [1sc into each of next 2 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (19).

Rnd 16: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into next st] 3 times, [1sc into next st, sc3tog over next 3 sts, 1sc into next st] 2 times, join (12).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a short tail for tying.

Crochet Ghost Sheet – Rounds 1 to 11:

We will now be working directly off of the front loops only, left over from round 13 of the head, to create the rest of the crochet ghost sheet costume.

If you have trouble working directly off of the head, you may instead make a new chain and work the sheet separately.

For this method, leave a long beginning tail for sewing and chain 33. Slip stitch into the first stitch to make a circle, then chain 1.

Afterwards, you may then use the long beginning tail to sew your sheet to the front loops only from round 13. Choose whichever method works best for you!

If you are working directly off of the head, make sure that the last round, or open end, of the head is facing upwards, and that you are inserting your hook through the front side of the stitches as you rejoin, as seen below.

Additionally, double-check that you are joining into the first stitch from round 13, a quarter turn away from your ghost’s face. Your new joining seam should continue in the same line as the previous seam.

free amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to rejoin into the front loops of round 13

Join yarn A (white) by inserting your hook into the front loop only of the first stitch from round 13. Pull up a loop of yarn A and chain 1.

You may then work over your beginning tail during round 1 of the sheet, or weave it in with a needle after working a few more rounds.

Rnd 1: 1sc into FLO of each st around, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 2: 1sc into each st around, do not join (33).

Rnd 3: sl st into each of next 3 sts, ch 3, 1dc into same st as last sl st, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into each of next 6 sts, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into next st, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, 1dc into next st, 1hdc into next st, 1sc into each of next 11sts, 1hdc into next st, 1dc into next st, ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sl st into top of ch 3 to join, ch 1 (33).

Take note that after joining into the top of the chain-3 at the end of round 3, this space will not be worked into again and does not add an extra stitch into subsequent rounds.

Round 4 will begin in the first double crochet from the previous round, and will be joined at the end into that same stitch that has been worked into the double crochet.

Rnd 4: 1sc into next dc, 1sc into each of next 9 sts, 4sc into next ch-sp, 1sc into each of next 15 sts, 4sc into next ch-sp, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (33).

Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 4 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 6 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnd 6: [1sc into each of next 11 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (39).

Rnd 7: [1sc into each of next 5 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 7 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (42).

Rnd 8: [1sc into each of next 13 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (45).

Rnd 9: [1sc into each of next 6 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 8 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (48).

Rnd 10: [1sc into each of next 15 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (51).

Rnd 11: [1sc into each of next 7 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 9 sts] 3 times, join (54).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a long tail for sewing.

Set aside for now and follow the directions for making the arms, legs, body, and attaching the head before sewing the drapes along the bottom of your crochet ghost sheet.

Crochet Sheet Ghost Arms:

With yarn B (blue-green), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 3: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 4: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 5: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 6: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join (6).

Fasten off and set aside for now.

Repeat rounds 1 to 7 to create a second arm, then continue to the instructions for the crochet sheet ghost legs below.

Crochet Sheet Ghost Legs – Rounds 1 to 5:

With yarn B (blue-green), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (8).

Rnd 3: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (10).

Rnd 4: [1sc into each of next 4 sts, 2sc into next st] 2 times, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 5: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 3 times, join (15).

This will be leg #1. Fasten off and leave a tail (~8 to 12 inches) for sewing. Set aside for now.

free amigurumi pattern tutorial of how the finished leg should look

Rnd 5: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (15).

This will be leg #2. Do not fasten off, as you will be working directly off of leg #2 to join both legs together.

Joining Legs (Round 6):

Retrieve leg #1 that you’ve set aside earlier and leave it on standby. You will be working round 6 around part of both legs to join them.

Rnd 6: 1sc into each of next 12 sts of leg #2, sk last 3 sts of leg #2, 1sc into 1st st of leg #1, 1sc into each of next 11 sts of leg #1, sk last 3 sts of leg #1, sl st into 1st st of rnd to join, ch 1 (24).

Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions below for sewing the legs together before continuing to round 7.

free amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to sew both legs together

You will now see that both leg pieces are joined together, with the exception of 3 stitches of each on the inside of the piece.

Make sure that both top loops of each of these stitches are facing upwards. Then, using the 8-12 inch tail left over from leg #1, sew this inside slit closed.

For best results, try sewing a total of 5 pairs of stitches together—the 3 pairs of stitches that were not worked into during round 6, as well as each pair of stitches on either side of this length.

In other words, where the 1st and 24th stitches of round 6 were worked into and the 12th and 13th stitches were worked into should be sewn together, as well.

Secure your sewing with a knot to the interior of the piece and trim any excess tail. Remove your stitch marker and continue to round 7 of the crochet sheet ghost body.

Crochet Sheet Ghost Body – Rounds 7 to 12:

Remove your stitch marker and continue to the next round. Begin stuffing as you go.

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).

Rnd 8: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 6 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (21).

Rnd 9: [1sc into each of next 5 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (18).

Rnd 10: [sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 4 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (15).

Rnd 11: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (12).

Retrieve both arms set aside earlier and flatten the top round of each arm so that the stitches form 2 parallel lines of 3 stitches each.

During round 12, you will be working through both layers of the arm and the current round of the body simultaneously to connect the arms onto the body.

free amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to attach the arm onto the body

Alternatively, if you have trouble with this method, you may instead work a normal round of single crochet stitches (1sc into each st around, join).

If finished this way, the arms may then be sewn onto the body individually, using a length of yarn A, between rounds 11 and 12 on either side of the body.

Choose whichever method works best for you!

Rnd 12: 1sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts of both arm and body together, 1sc into each of next 4 sts, 1sc into each of next 3 sts of both arm and body together, 1sc into next st, join (12).

Fasten off yarn A and leave a long (~3 ft) tail for sewing.

Then, continue to the instructions for attaching the head below.

Attaching Head:

Retrieve the head set aside earlier and fold rounds 1 to 11 of the sheet up over the head so that the last round, or bottom opening, of the head beneath the sheet is exposed.

Then, align the bottom opening of the head on top of the body so that the face is facing forward and centered with the front of the body, and the arm holes on the sides of the sheet are lined up with the arms on the body.

With the long end tail left over from fastening off of the body, sew around the entire circumference of the head and body openings, stitch by stitch, to connect both pieces together.

free amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to sew the head and the body together

If you have trouble getting your needle into the crevice between the head and body, try sewing very loosely, as shown above, leaving a large gap between the head and the body for you to more easily maneuver in.

Then, once you’ve completed sewing around the full circumference, you may go back and tighten each strand of your sewing individually. Just be careful to tighten the strands in the same sequence as you’ve sewn them!

Once your head and body are connected, secure your sewing with a knot to the end tail from the head, or to a nearby stitch, trim your tail, and weave in any excess length.

Sewing Drapes:

Fold rounds 1 to 11 of the sheet back down so that the body is covered by the sheet.

Then, pull the arms from the body through the holes on either side of the sheet.

To finish off your crochet sheet ghost amigurumi, we will now be sewing along the bottom edge of the sheet to add a draping effect around the body.

crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern tutorial of how to sew the drapes around the bottom of the sheet

To begin, thread the long end tail, left over from fastening off of the sheet, through your needle.

Next, insert your needle, from front to back, beneath both loops of the first stitch of the last round of the sheet.

Pull your entire tail through the stitch, then repeat these steps (insert from front to back, pull through) on the next stitch, as well.

Then, skip the next 3 stitches and insert your needle into the 4th stitch from where you last inserted.

As you pull though, allow the stitches you skipped to fold outwards, or towards you, to create a small drape in the fabric.

Pull your tail all of the way through, and be sure to pull your sewing tight before your next stitch to keep the drape pronounced and secure.

Then, insert your needle and pull through each of the next 3 stitches.

crochet sheet ghost amigurumi pattern tutorial of how the finished drapes should look

Repeat all steps (sew next 2 stitches, skip 3 stitches, sew next 4 stitches) 5 more times around the entire circumference of your crochet ghost sheet, for a total of 6 sewn drapes.

Then, secure your sewing with a knot onto a nearby stitch. Trim your tail and sew in any remaining length.
