You may also make your pieces larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your yarn weight and/or hook size, respectively.

*Finished dimensions are calculated from a model using medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, the YU/YO method and the following gauge: 18 sc x 21 rows = 4 inches.

And don’t forget to add your project on Ravelry!

    • Yarn B – red (example uses Red Heart Super Saver: Cherry Red)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Terminology:

This free crochet Little Mushroom Guy amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:

  • st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
  • ch = chain stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • BLO = back loop only
  • rep = repeat

Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.

Special Stitch Instructions:

Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ page before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

This free crochet Little Mushroom Guy amigurumi pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:

  • Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
  • Invisible Decrease
  • Joining Rounds
  • Front Post Double Crochet

This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Front Post Double Crochet:

This free crochet Little Mushroom Guy pattern uses front post double crochet stitches to create the radial ribs around the mushroom cap and ruff, as seen below.

how to do a front post double crochet tutorial

To begin your front post double crochet, locate your double crochet in the row below that your new stitch will be worked onto.

Instead of working into the top two loops of the stitch, as you would for a normal double crochet, you will instead be working your stitch around the vertical body of the double crochet itself.

Yarn over, then insert your hook, from right to left for right-handed crocheters (or left to right for lefties) underneath the vertical body of the double crochet in the row below.

With your hook, exit on the opposite side of the double crochet. The vertical body of your double crochet should now be laying over top of your hook.

Yarn over, then pull a new loop beneath the body of the double crochet so that your hook is now back on the right side (or left side, for lefties) of the double crochet.

You should now have three loops on your hook. Complete your double crochet as normal by yarning over and pulling through two loops, two times.

Pattern Instructions | Crochet Little Mushroom Guy

Little Crochet Guy - Base Pattern:

Before making your Little Mushroom Guy accessories, you should first start with the Little Crochet Guy base pattern.

The example body shown throughout this free crochet Little Mushroom Guy doll pattern is worked in a single color (white) only, with no color changes, as seen below.

The alternative example, as seen on the right in the cover image, uses a body that is worked in 2 colors, with separate colors used for the skin (beige) and body (white).

However, you may also customize your base pattern into different color ways by following the Customizing Colors instructions, as outlined in the base pattern.

Little Mushroom Guy Cap - Bottom Layer:

With yarn A (white), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).

Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).

Rnd 2: 2sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (12).

Rnd 3: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (18).

Rnd 4: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 6 times, join, ch 1 (24).

Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 7 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (27).

Rnd 6: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (27).

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (27).

Rnd 9: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 2 (27).

Rnd 10: 1hdc into each st around, join, ch 1 (27).

For best results, try working each stitch during round 11 into the back loop and the 3rd loop of each half double crochet around.

The 3rd loop is located just behind the back loop, on the back side of each half double crochet, as seen below.

If you find this method difficult, however, you may work round 11 into the back loops only, instead.

Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the instructions for embroidering spots onto your cap before continuing.

Alternatively, for a plain cap without spots, you may skip ahead to joining the layers of your crochet Little Mushroom Guy cap together, instead.

Embroidering Spots:

With a long length of yarn A (white), embroider as many or as few spots around the circumference of your crochet Little Mushroom Guy cap as desired.

To create a spot, begin by inserting your needle, from inside to outside, between any 2 stitches of your mushroom cap.

Pull through, leaving a short tail on the inside for tying later. Then, insert your needle back into your cap 1 round down, and pull through.

Exit again through the same space as where you first began, and insert your needle 1 round down just like before.

Repeat this last step one more time, or until you are satisfied with the size of your mushroom spot.

You may either finish off each spot individually by tying both ends together on the inside of your piece, or continue to your next spot using the same length of yarn.

If you choose to continue with the same strand, just take extra care to avoid pulling the yarn too tight across the inside of your mushroom as you travel to your next spot.

Repeat all steps around the entirety of your crochet mushroom cap until you are satisfied with the density of your embroidered spots.

When you are finished, tie your end tail to your beginning tail on the inside of your piece and trim any excess length.

Remove your stitch marker and continue to the instructions for joining both mushroom cap layers together next.

Crochet Mushroom Cap - Joining Layers:

Place the top layer of your crochet mushroom cap on top of the bottom layer, wrong sides together, and rotate both pieces so that the joining seams of both are aligned together.

We will be working each stitch in round 13 through the top layer and bottom layer simultaneously, in order to join both layers together, as seen below.

free Little Mushroom Guy crochet doll tutorial of how to join both layers of the mushroom cap together

Rnd 13: in both layers around, [1sc into each of next 6 sts, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join (48).

Fasten off yarn B and weave in all ends.

Crochet Little Mushroom Guy Ruff:

With yarn A (white), leave a 5 to 7 inch beginning tail and chain 19.

Fasten off by working 1 more chain and cutting your yarn, leaving another 5 to 7 inch end tail.

Remove your hook and pull up on your working loop until your end tail fully exits out of the top of your last chain, then tighten that last chain to secure everything in place.

You should still have a total of 19 workable chain stitches, plus the additional tightened chain used to fasten off. This last chain will not be worked back into.

Do not cut your beginning and end tails. These strands will be used to tie your ruff onto your Little Mushroom Guy later.

With yarn A (white), rejoin your yarn by inserting your hook into the first chain in the length you’ve just made.

Pull up a new loop of yarn A and chain 1. Row 1 will begin in the same stitch as where you've just joined your yarn.

Row 1: [2sc into next st, 1dc into next st] 9 times, 2sc into next st, ch 1, turn (29).

Row 2: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st, 1FPdc around next st] 9 times, 1sc into next st, 2sc into next st (39).

Fasten off and weave in all tails, except for the beginning and end tails from your original chain.

Assembling Pieces:

To assemble all pieces of your crochet Little Mushroom Guy together, begin by wrapping the ruff around the neck of the body.

Make sure that the front post double crochets of the ruff are facing outwards, and your beginning and end tails are rotated towards the back.

Then, tie both tails together into a simple bow to secure your ruff.

To finish, take the crochet mushroom cap that you’ve set aside earlier and push it down on top of the head until it is secure.
