This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Little Witch Guy
Little Crochet Guy - Base Pattern:
Before making your Little Witch Guy accessories, you should first start with the Little Crochet Guy base pattern.
The example body used for this free crochet Little Witch Guy doll pattern is worked in 3 colors, with separate colors used for the skin (beige), body (purple), and shoes (black), as seen below.
The alternative example (color variation 2), as seen on the right in the cover image, uses a body that is worked in one solid color (green).
You may also customize your base pattern into different color ways by following the Customizing Colors instructions, as outlined in the base pattern.

Crochet Little Witch Guy Hat:
With yarn A (purple), make a magic ring (or ch 2, work rnd 1 into 2nd ch from hook).
Rnd 1: 6sc into ring, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 2: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (6).
Rnd 3: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (9).
Rnd 4: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 2 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 5: [1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (15).

Rnd 6: [1sc into next st, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 7: [1sc into each of next 5 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (21).
Rnd 8: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 4 sts] 3 times, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 9: [1sc into each of next 7 sts, 2sc into next st] 3 times, join, ch 1 (27).
Rnd 10: 1sc into each st around, join (27).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a short tail for tying.

Join yarn B (orange) by inserting your hook into the first stitch of your next round. Pull up a loop of yarn B and chain 1.
Tie the tails of both yarn A and yarn B together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends, then trim any excess length.
Rnd 11: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (27).
Rnd 12: 1sc into each st around, join (27).
Fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail for tying. Rejoin yarn A (purple) using the same method as before.
Rnd 13: 1sc into each st around, do not join (27).
Take care to work round 14 loosely, so that your slip stitches do not cinch your project. You may also size up your hook for round 14 only, if needed.
Rnd 14: sl st into each st around, join, ch 1 (27).

Take care when working round 15 to work into the previous round of slip stitches only. Do not work into tops of the stitches from round 13 behind your slip stitches.
Alternatively, if you find this method difficult, you may skip the round of slip stitches entirely and simply work round 15 into the front loops only of round 13, instead.
Rnd 15: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 2sc into next st] 9 times, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnd 16: [1sc into each of next 5 sts, 2sc into next st] 6 times, join, ch 1 (42).
Rnd 17: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 4 sts] 6 times, join (48).
Fasten off yarn A and weave in any remaining tails.

Embroidering Buckle:
To add a buckle onto your crochet Little Witch Guy hat, we will be embroidering a simple square shape over top of the stripe of yarn B in rounds 11 and 12.
With a length of yarn C (black), sew through the front of the hat, from inside to outside, between rounds 10 and 11, just above the stripe.
Reinsert your needle 3 stitches to the right to create a horizontal bar above the stripe. Exit with your needle 3 stitches to the left, then reinsert again 3 stitches to the right, sewing through the same spaces as before.
Next, exit 3 rounds directly below, between rounds 13 and 14, then reinsert once more, 3 rounds directly above. Repeat these steps 1 more time.
Exit 3 rounds below once more, then reinsert 3 stitches to the left. Embroider another layer of this new horizontal line through the same spaces, like before.
Finally, exit 3 rounds directly above, through the same space where you first began, then reinsert 3 rounds directly below. Repeat these steps 1 more time.

Tie both tails of yarn C together on the inside of your piece to secure your embroidery, then trim any excess length.
Set aside for now and continue to the instructions for the Little Witch Guy broom next.
Little Witch Guy Broom:
With yarn D (tan), lay your yarn across the inside of your fingers so that the end of the yarn is pointing downward, toward your pinky.
Hold the end of the yarn on your pinky with your thumb and wrap the other end up and over your pointer finger, then down the back side of your fingers until it creates one big loop.

Repeat the same motion, wrapping your yarn around your fingers a total of 20 times, or until you are satisfied with the bulk of your broom bundle.
Cut your yarn so that the end tail is on the same side of your hand as your beginning tail, pointing toward your pinky.

Take your pipe cleaner and insert one end underneath all 20 strands of your yarn near your pointer finger, or on the opposite side from your beginning and end tails.
Push the pipe cleaner beneath the yarn until it is halfway through. Then, point both ends of the pipe cleaner upward in a thin U-shape.

Near the base of the U-shape, just above the yarn, pinch both legs of the pipe cleaner together and twist them tightly, locking the yarn between them in place.
Remove your fingers from the bundle of yarn and continue to twist the two legs of the pipe cleaner around each other.
Continue twisting upwards until your broom handle reaches your desired length, then trim the rest of the pipe cleaner legs. The example Little Witch Guy broom has a handle that is 2.5 inches tall.

With a new length of yarn D (beige), wrap a strand around the entire bundle of yarn, about 0.5 inches below the beginning of the pipe cleaner.
Tie both ends of your yarn tightly. If desired, you may then pull individual strands inside the bundle downward until the section between the pipe cleaner and tied midsection looks clean.
Finally, take your scissor and trim the bottom of the bundle, beneath the tied midsection, to your desired length. The example broom keeps about 0.75 inches of yarn length below the midsection.

Assembling Pieces:
To assemble all pieces together, begin by posing the broom next to the arm of your crochet Little Witch Guy.
For a more permanent pose, you may also stick the end of the broom through the arm itself, or sew it onto the arm with a length of yarn.
To finish, take the crochet witch hat that you’ve set aside earlier and push it down on top of the head until it is secure.
