So, without further ado, here is the pattern for the Campfire Keychain, part 1 of 7 in our Scrap Buster Keychains collection!

Pattern Information | Free Crochet Campfire Keychain

This free crochet campfire keychain pattern has a difficulty rating of intermediate.

The finished dimensions are 2.5 inches (height) by 2 inches (width) by 2 inches (depth) before adding the keychain clip.*

You may also make your pieces larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing your yarn weight and/or hook size, respectively.

*Finished dimensions are calculated from a model using medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, the YU/YO method and the following gauge: 18 sc x 21 rows = 4 inches.

And don’t forget to add your project on Ravelry!

  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • BLO = back loop only

This free crochet campfire keychain pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:

  • Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
  • Invisible Decrease
  • Joining Rounds

This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.

Rnd 7: 1sc into each st around, join (6).

Rnd 8: 1sc into each st around, join (6).

Fasten off yarn B and leave a tail for sewing closed.

To sew the bottom hole of the log closed, pass your needle, from front to back, through the back loop only of each stitch around and then pull tight.

Secure your sewing with a knot, trim the tail, then sew in any remaining length.

Sewing Campfire Together:

Retrieve log #1 that you’ve set aside earlier and rotate it so that it is perpendicular to log #2.

Locate the gap created during round 5 of log #2, in the chain spaces between the double crochets, and insert log #1 through the gap in the middle of log #2.

Align the logs so that log #1 is pushed halfway through log #2, and both logs are now connected in an X-shape.

With a length of yarn B (brown), leave a short tail for tying and sew through the center of logs #1 and #2, in the area where they overlap, to secure them together.

Reinsert your needle one stitch over and pass your needle back through both logs once more, so that both ends of your yarn are now on the same side.

Next, retrieve your crochet campfire flame and align it in your desired direction on top of the crossed logs.

With the same length of yarn, insert your needle next to the center bottom of your flame, beside where you’ve sewn the flame closed, and out again on the other side of the bottom center.

Lastly, tie your beginning and end tails together tightly to finish and weave in any remaining length.

If desired, you may use the same method in other spots between the logs and flame, for a more secure hold.

Attaching Keychain:

To make your amigurumi into a keychain, like the sample piece below, begin by splitting your first jump ring with pliers and locate the stitch on your piece that you would like to be the topmost point.

The example crochet campfire keychain is attached to the clip in the seam between rounds 3 and 4 of the flame, on the opposite side from the joining seam.

Insert one end of the jump ring through the surface of your piece on one side of your chosen stitch, then out again on the other side of that stitch.

Then, use your pliers to bend the jump ring securely closed. Repeat these steps with a second jump ring onto the bottom of your keychain clip.

Finally, connect your amigurumi and keychain clip together by threading a third jump ring through both of your first two jump rings, and bending it closed to create a chain of three jump rings total.

The length of your chain can be modified to be longer or shorter by using more or fewer jump rings, respectively. You may also connect your jump rings onto a premade chain, instead.

Alternatively, you may also sew your piece onto the keychain clip with a length of yarn, or create a length of macramé or braid to connect your pieces together, as well.

Choose whichever method works best for you! Just be sure to choose components that are durable enough for your intended use!
