Terminology:
This free crochet Christmas stocking amigurumi pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (over the span of 2 stitches), also known as a decrease
- FPdc = front post double crochet
- FLO = front loop only
- sk = skip
- rep = repeat
Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.

Special Stitch Instructions
Please review our special stitch instructions on our Stitch Tutorials FAQ before beginning, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.

This free crochet stocking amigurumi pattern uses the following special stitch tutorials:
- Single Crochet (YU/YO Method)
- Invisible Decrease
- Joining Rounds
- Front Post Double Crochet
This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.
Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.
Front Post Double Crochet:
This free crochet Christmas stocking amigurumi pattern uses front post double crochet stitches to create the ribbing effect along the top of the stocking, as seen below.

To begin your front post double crochet, locate your double crochet in the row below that your new stitch will be worked onto.
Instead of working into the top two loops of the stitch, as you would for a normal double crochet, you will instead be working your stitch around the vertical body of the double crochet itself.
Yarn over, then insert your hook, from right to left for righties (or left to right for lefties) underneath the vertical body of the double crochet in the row below.
With your hook, exit on the opposite side of the double crochet. The vertical body of your double crochet should now be laying over top of your hook.
Yarn over, then pull through a new loop underneath the body of the double crochet until your hook is back on the right side (or left side, for lefties).
You should now have three loops on your hook. Complete your double crochet as normal by yarning over and pulling through two loops, two times.
Pattern Instructions | Free Crochet Christmas Stocking Amigurumi
This pattern includes directions for two stocking variations: a hollow stocking (usable for putting items inside) or as a plushie toy (closed and stuffed on the inside).
For the hollow version, simply omit stuffing your piece after round 14, then skip the last section of the pattern.
Crochet Christmas Stocking – Rounds 1 to 13:
With yarn A (red), chain 13.
Rnd 1: beginning in 2nd ch from hook, *1sc into each of next 11 sts, 2sc into next st,* working into other side of ch sts, rep from * to * 1 time, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (26).
Rnd 2: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 10 sts, 2sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (32).
Rnd 3: [1sc into each of next 14 sts, 2sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (36).

Rnd 4: 1sc into each at around, join, ch 1 (36).
Rnds 5 to 10 (6 rnds): rep rnd 4 (36).
Rnd 11: 1sc into each of next 32 sts, [sc2tog over next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (34).
Rnd 12: sc2tog over next 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 28 sts, [sc2tog over next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (31).
Rnd 13: sk next st, 1sc into each of next 28 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts, join (29).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a tail for sewing.

Follow the instructions next for adding the eyes, mouth, and blush before continuing to round 14 of your crochet Christmas stocking.
Adding Eyes:
Using the example piece below as reference, insert both safety eyes through the front of your piece (a little over a quarter turn before your joining seam).
The safety eyes should be inserted between rounds 8 and 9 and should sit 6 stitches apart, from the center of one eye to the center of the other.

Adding Mouth:
Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a mouth using black embroidery floss.
The mouth should be embroidered over top of round 7 and be centered between the eyes. The mouth will be 2 stitches wide and 1 round tall.

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 2 stitches to the right from where you've inserted the left eye. Pull through and leave some tail for tying later.
Then, insert your needle again, 2 stitches to the right, and out again, 1 round down and 1 stitch to the left from where you've just inserted, and pull through.

Pass your needle up and underneath the horizontal strand you’ve just created and pull through. Then, insert your needle back into the same space as you've last exited from.
Pull your thread through and tug it down slightly until it forms a V-shape. Gently tie both ends together inside your piece.
Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.
Adding Blush:
Using the example piece below as reference, embroider a blush line using pink embroidery floss or yarn next to each eye.
Each blush line should start 1 round down (between rounds 7 and 8) and 1 stitch outwards from where each eye was inserted, and span 1 stitch length outwards (away from the center of the face).

Begin by inserting your needle from inside to outside, 1 round down and 1 stitch outwards from where you’ve inserted the eye.
Pull through, leaving some tail inside for tying later. Then, insert your needle back in, 1 more stitch outwards.
If using yarn, you may skip ahead to tying both ends together on the inside of your piece.
If using embroidery floss, pass your needle back out through the same space as you’ve last exited from and pull through. Reinsert your needle, again, 1 stitch outwards in the same place as before.
Repeat these last steps 3 more times, or until you are satisfied with the size of your blush. Then, gently tie both ends together on the inside of your piece.
Take extra care as you tie your ends not to pull the threads too tight! After finishing your knot, trim any excess length.
Closing Toe (Round 14):

Beginning with a new strand of yarn A (red), rejoin your yarn by inserting your hook into the 3rd stitch of round 13.
Leaving a short tail for tying, pull up a loop of yarn A, then chain 1. This stitch that you have just joined into will be your new starting point for all subsequent rounds.
The next round will end early, skipping the last 3 stitches from round 13, as well as the first 2 stitches from the beginning of round 13.
Rnd 14: 1sc into each of next 24 sts, sk next 5 sts, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (24).
Secure your working loop with a stitch marker and follow the directions next to sew the toe closed before continuing.

You will now see that the toe of the stocking has a small hole on the top from skipping the 5 stitches (the first 2 and last 3) from round 13.
Squeeze the front and back sides of the stocking together so that the open stitches form two parallel lines of two stitches each, plus one extra stitch at the outermost end of the toe.
Using the tail left over from fastening off of round 13, sew this hole closed.
Sew through the outermost stitch first (the last stitch from round 13), then through each of the next two pairs of stitches, moving away from the toe.
For best results, sew through the next pair of stitches—where the first and last stitches of round 14 were worked into—in the same way, as well.
To finish, thread your yarn to the inside of the piece and secure it with a knot to the beginning tail from round 14. Trim any excess length.

Crochet Christmas Stocking – Rounds 15 to 22:
Remove your stitch marker and continue to the next round.
If you plan to close your crochet Christmas stocking into a plushie toy, begin stuffing as you go.
Rnd 15: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 16: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 17: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 18: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 19: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (24).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a short tail for tying.
Do not add any more stuffing beyond this point (past round 19).

Join yarn B (white) by inserting your hook into the first stitch of the next round. Pull up a loop of yarn B and chain 1.
Tie the tails of both yarn A and yarn B together on the interior of your piece to secure your ends.
The next three rounds use front post double crochet stitches to add vertical ribs to the top of your crochet Christmas stocking.
For an easier variation without the ribbing effect, you may replace rounds 20 to 22 with normal rounds instead (1sc into each st around, join, ch 1).
Rnd 20: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 1dc into next st] 8 times, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 21: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 1FPdc around next st] 8 times, join, ch 1 (24).
Rnd 22: [1sc into each of next 2 sts, 1FPdc around next st] 8 times, join (24).
If you are making the hollow version of the stocking, fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail. Then, weave in your end tail to finish your piece.
For the stuffed plush version of the stocking, fasten off yarn B and leave a tail long enough for sewing around the top edge of your crochet Christmas stocking.
Then, continue to the next section below to customize your stocking into a closed piece.

Closing Stocking (Plushie Version Only):
To close your crochet Christmas stocking into a plushie toy, we will be adding another piece into the top of the stocking to seal off the opening.
With yarn B (white), chain 6.
Rnd 1: beginning in 2nd ch from hook, *1sc into each of next 4 sts, 2sc into next st,* working into other side of ch sts, rep from * to * 1 time, sl st into 1st st to join, ch 1 (12).
Rnd 2: [2sc into next st, 1sc into each of next 3 sts, 2sc into each of next 2 sts] 2 times, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 3: 1sc into FLO of each st around, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 4: 1sc into each st around, join, ch 1 (18).
Rnd 5: 1sc into each st around, join (18).
Fasten off yarn B and leave a short tail for tying.

Insert your new piece into the top opening of your crochet Christmas stocking so that the last round is facing up and is level with the last round of your stocking.
Likewise, the beginning rounds should be pushed down inside of the stocking, lining up with the top edge of your stuffing (around round 19).
The longer sides of the new oval piece should be rotated to match up with the longer sides, or front and back sides, of the larger stocking.
Then, using the long tail left over from fastening off of the stocking, sew around the entire top circumference of both layers together to seal off the opening of your stocking.
Please note, however, that the inside piece has 6 fewer stitches than the outside rim of the stocking.
Therefore, for best results, start by sewing through one stitch on the outside stocking layer only. Then, sew through each of the next three stitches of both layers together.
Repeat this method all of the way around (one stitch of the outer layer only, then three stitches of both layers together), then secure your sewing with a knot to the end tail of the inner piece.
After knotting, trim your tails and thread any remaining length into the inside of your piece to complete your crochet Christmas stocking plushie.
