Terminology:
This free crochet heart garland pattern uses English (US) terminology:
- st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sc3tog = single crochet 3 together (over the span of 3 stitches)
Please note that this pattern is written so that each crochet stitch abbreviation is attached to a number, such as 1sc, 2sc, etc. This number denotes how many of that stitch is to be worked into the same stitch.
In other words, 1sc = one single crochet, whereas 2sc = two single crochet worked into one stitch, also known as an increase.
Special Stitch Instructions | Free Crochet Heart Garland
Please read through all special stitch instructions carefully before beginning your project, as some techniques may be unique to this pattern.
This pattern is worked in the round, with each round joined at the end with a slip stitch. Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.
Be sure to always keep the ‘right side’ of your stitches facing outwards as you work. The right side is the front side of the stitch that is facing you as you are completing each stitch.
Joining Rounds:
Unless otherwise stated, each round in this pattern is joined at the end with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, followed by one or more chain stitches.
For a cleaner seam, and to ensure that these stitches are not accidentally worked into later, tighten both the slip stitch and chain as shown below.
Hold your working loop firmly on your hook and pull up with your hook until your slip stitch is tight. Then, pull back on your working tail until your loop is back to fitting snugly around your hook.
Repeat these steps with the following one or more chain stitches before your next round, as well.
Unless otherwise instructed, the first stitch of your next round will always be worked into the same stitch as your joining slip stitch has been worked into.

Rnd 4: sl st into each st around, do not join (36).
Fasten off yarn A and leave a tail for sewing.
Finishing Off Crochet Heart:
To finish off your crochet heart, follow the tutorial below to create a clean, uniform edge on your finished piece.
With your tapestry needle, take your end tail and pass it beneath both loops of your first slip stitch from round 4.
Then, insert your needle through the middle of the last slip stitch you’ve created and pull your tail through to the back of your heart. Pull your tail snugly, but not too tight!
Finally, secure your tail with a knot onto the back of your piece, trim your tail, and sew in any remaining length.
Repeat all steps from round 1 of the crochet heart as many times as desired, until you have enough hearts for your crochet heart garland.
The example garland shown in photos uses 2 hearts made from yarn A and yarn B each, and 1 heart made from yarn C and yarn D each, for a total of 6 hearts.
Once you have all of your hearts complete, you may then continue to the next section to attach your hearts into a garland.
Attaching Crochet Heart Garland:
You’ll be attaching each heart onto your garland with two single crochet stitches each. To make things easier when you attach them later, you may prepare your hearts with stitch markers ahead of time.
First, locate the center stitch from round 3 (not your slip stitch from round 4) at the top of your heart, in the divot between the rounded bumps on either side (where the sc3tog was worked).
Then, count 4 stitches outwards on either side and add a stitch marker into both of these stitches. Again, make sure to add your stitch markers into the single crochets from round 3 of the heart, not into the slip stitches from round 4.
You should be left with a total of 9 stitches from stitch marker to stitch marker, centered along the top edge of the heart.
Repeat this on all of your hearts. You will be working into these two marked stitches to attach each heart onto the garland. You may remove each stitch marker as you work into the stitch.
With yarn E (white), work row 1 below to attach your hearts into a garland.
If you plan to use your beginning and end tails to tie up your garland, be sure to leave some tail at the beginning of your work.
Row 1: [ch 18, 1sc into 1st marked st of next heart, ch 5, 1sc into 2nd marked st] 6 times, ch 18 (168).
The pattern given above is for the example garland, as seen in photos, which consists of six hearts across. You may, however, attach as many hearts as you’d like for any length desired.
To make the garland longer, simply repeat the bracketed sequence in the pattern once more for each additional heart you’d like to attach.
You may also lengthen or shorten the distance between hearts by changing each of the ‘ch 18’ sequences.
Once all of your hearts are attached and your garland reaches your desired length, fasten off yarn E and leave a tail for either tying or sewing.
Finally, you may use your beginning and end tails to tie up your garland, or weave them into your chain for a more finished look. Choose whichever works best for you!
